Strange, 50, prominent Catahoula Parish planter was shot and killed here yesterday, officials said, by Shelton Kirby, 28, a transfer operator. The alleged slayer has been charged with manslaughter. The shooting occurred Monday afternoon about 2:30 o'clock in the rear of a garage of the main street of Jonesville. After an exchange of words, Kirby was said to have fired four shots, three of which took effect in the victim's head, stomach and chest, killing him instantly. Immediately afterward Kirby surrendered to Sheriff C. C. Finlay and was taken to Harrisonburg, where he was charged with manslaughter and released under $2,500 bond. The shooting occurred in the presence of several witnesses, all of whom were silent regarding the cause of the affray. Kirby declined to issue a statement. Strange is survived by his widow, three daughters and four sons.
