All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Date: August 7, 1941 Headline: Mrs. Golda Sorrell is Killed in Accident Here Saturday, August 2 Jena's first fatal accident this year occurred Saturday, August 2 at approximately 11:30 a.m. when Mrs. Golda Sorrell, 26, of Olla was killed almost instantly in a collision between the automobile in which she was riding, driven by Mrs. Lester Sorrell, also of Olla, and a 1941 Ford truck driven by Louis Drewett, near Roy Noakes Welding Shop, on the Jena-Olla gravel road. A few minutes after the wreck Dr. D. L. Trax of Trout pronounced the victim dead and Dr. J. A. Gaharan of Olla, parish coroner, was summoned to the scene. After examination of the body a coroner's inquest was held with the following jurymen: J. M. Coleman, S. T. Chapman, J. M. Taylor, M. F. Flaherty, and C. W. Flowers. The following verdict was rendered: Mrs. Dewey Sorrell came to her death by means of a collision between a 1939 V-8 car in which deceased was riding and a 1941 Ford truck driven by Louis Drewett, the accident appearing to be unavoidable. Mrs. Lester Sorrell was taken to Culpepper and White Clinic in Alexandria for treatment but received no serious injuries or broken bones. Mr. Drewett was not hurt. The automobile was completely demolished, having been hit by the truck from the rear, when attempting to make a turn. The truck had one bent front fender. The body was taken by Upshaw Funeral Home hearse to Cushing, Texas, leaving Jena early Sunday morning and arriving in Cushing about 12 noon. Interment was by the Whitley Funeral Home of Cushing Monday. Upshaw Funeral was in charge of the arrangements in Jena. The deceased was a member of the Baptist Church. She was a former resident of Leggett, Texas, but had been living in Olla for about six months. Surviving are: H. D. Sorrell, husband, and one small daughter of Olla; George White of Texas, father; Mrs. Buford Clayton of Cushing, Texas, mother; and one sister, whose name could not be obtained.
