Rain-Slippery Blacktop Causes Accidents Two persons were killed and four others injured in a series of accidents involving LaSalle Parish citizens during the past weekend. Marvin Sharp of Rhinehart, 22 years of age, was killed when the car he was driving went out of control near Pollock on a rain-slippery blacktop, ran off a dump and turned over on him, killing him almost instantly. A companion in the car was uninjured. (See funeral story elsewhere in the paper.) Also, dead in a highway mishap on La. No. 8 was Mrs. Shirley S. Valjallo, 21 years o age, of Route 2, Pollock, who was killed instantly Sunday morning about 10:30 o'clock, when the car she was driving went out of control and smashed into a loaded livestock truck-trailer. As reported by Sgt. Don Steen of the state police, Mrs. Valjallo and a companion, Miss June Parker of Route 1, Trout, were traveling north on La. No. 8, en route to Trout when Mrs. Valjallo's car went out of control on the slippery blacktop on "the Sam Finley curve." The woman's car swerved across the road into the path of the loaded livestock truck with the left rear portion of her car hitting the front left side of the livestock truck which was being driven by Alvin Lewis. The impact of the collision three both Mrs. Valjallo and Miss Parker out of their car and Mrs. Valjallo was thrown under the livestock trailer which was loaded with some 20 to 30 head of horses which were being returned from the rodeo which was held in Jena over the weekend. The right rear wheel of the trailer crushed the head and chest of the woman who is survived by her husband, john Valjallo; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Lincecum of Pollock; two sisters, Mrs. Lorraine Temple of Dodson, and Miss Sarah Lincecum of Pollock, and one brother, James Lincecum of Pollock. Miss Parker was hospitalized at the Jena Hospital. Sgt Steen reported no charges had been filed in the accident which was termed unavoidable. Three other LaSalle parish persons were hospitalized at Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria as the result of a highway mishap near Oberlin Sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock. Eugene Robbins, 26, and his wife and two children, Ronnie, 8, and Rodger, 4, were returning toward Alexandria when, according to Mr. Robbins' report, a heavy gust of wind and rain hit the car causing him to lose control. The car skidded across the road, ran into an embankment and hit a tree. Mrs. Robbins and the two children were hospitalized and Mr. Robbins received emergency treatment and was released. His wife reportedly suffered a concussion and the oldest boy, Ronnie, received a broken shoulder which necessitated an operation. The youngest son, Rodger, was discharged from the hospital Tuesday but Mrs. Robbins and Ronnie are still hospitalized.
