Whatley Dies Thursday At Alexandria People all over LaSalle Parish and this entire section were indeed saddened to learn of the death of Joseph Phienas Whatley, which occured at the Baptist Hospital in Alexandria on Thursday, August 29th, 1929. Mr. Whatley had been ill for three weeks, suffering from the effects of blood poisoning and other complications. His condition was considered serious for several days before his death, nevertheless the news of his death was a great shock to many. At the time of his death his loved ones were at his bedside and every attention that love and medical skill could offer was shown in an effort to save his life. Mr. Whatley was born May 12th, 1859 at Eden, in the same community where he passed all his life and near where he was residing at the time of his death. He was seventy-two years, three months and seventeen days old. On January 31st, 1895 he was married to Miss Susie Young. Mrs. Whatley and their seven children survive. They are: Mrs. J. Pipes, Bernice Whatley, Mrs. I.A. Gross, Clayton and Jessie Whatley, all of Eden, Mrs. B.O. Bourne of Santa Rosa, Texas and J.L. Whatley, of Jena. Mr. Whatley joined the Methodist Episcopal Church South when a young man. He was a faithful member of the Odd Fellows Order for years. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him and was loved and respected all over this section. His mourning friends are to be numbered by the score. He was a farmer an merchant and he had spent a most successful life in the Eden community. The funeral services were held at the family residence on Friday, August 30th. Interment was in the Eden cemetery. Rev. E.C. Dufresne, pastor of the Jena M.E. Church and Rev. John Rasmussen, pastor of the Trout M.E. Church, conducted the funeral services. People all over this section sent flowers to express in a small way their honor for Mr. Whatley and all who knew him have been extending their words of sympathy to the bereaved family. The Times takes this opportunity of expressing to the family of the deceased the sincere sympathy of this organization. The workings of the Almighty are beyond the understanding of man but we all can pause and do honor to the living memory of a good man who has passed on to his final rewards.
