All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Elmer Whatley is fatally shot: Evans boy held Alleged slayer surrenders to Grant officals at Colfax Elmer Whatley, 22, of White Sulphur Springs, is dead, and Hugh Evans, of the Catahoula Lake vicinity, is being held in jail as the result of an altercation which occurred at the old Thompson ferry house on Little River about five o'clock last Saturday afternoon. Whatley was shot one time in the jaw, the bullet ranging upward threough his brain. It is said that several persons were present when the shooting took place, but no eye witnesses could be found to testify before the coroner's jury. The killing took place just across the parish line in Grant parish. Whatley is the youngest son pf Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Whatley. Evans, who is said to be 17 years old, surrended to Grant parish officials in Clofax Sunday. Funeral services were held for young Whatley Sunday afternoon from the family residence, with Rev. E.J. Phaers, pastor of the Good Pine Baptist Church conducting the ceremony. A large crowd of friends and relatives attended the last rites. Interment was in the family cemetery near the home.
