Roland of Alexandria, former longtime co-owner of Roland Construction Co., died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, in Rapides General Hospital. He was 78. Roland was an active lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of trustees and on the administrative board. He was also a member of Associated General Contractors. Roland was a member of Sons of American Revolution, Enemund Meullion Chapter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theatre in the Signal Corp for two years. Roland was a 1938 graduate of Bolton high School. Services were held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, in the First Methodist Church. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Pineville, under direction of John Kramer and Son. Survivors include his wife, Alice Johnston Roland of Alexandria; three daughters, Susan Alice Roland of Natchitoches, Sally Roland Gilbert of baton Rouge and Ellen Roland Henry of Jena; two sons, James W. Roland, Jr. of St. Francisville and Robert Timothy Roland of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; one sister, Sarah Roland Henderson of Shreveport; and 13 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Alexandria, 2727 Jackson St., Alexandria, La. 71301, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
