Roberts, one of the oldest and most universally beloved citizens of our town and parish, died at his home in old Jena last Monday at 5:15 p.m. after several weeks of illness. "Uncle Tom," as he was familiarly known, has been recognized ever since he came to this parish from Amite County, Miss., about thirteen years ago, as a leader in every religious and moral movement, and his influence has certainly been felt in many ways, and in his demise an irreparable loss, it would seem, has come to our community. Uncle Tom was a devoted member of the Methodist Church, belong to that class we reverently speak of as "Old Time Methodist." A veteran in the religious realm, he was also a veteran in the Civil War, taking up arms for his native state, Mississippi, while he was yet a boy. His passing now leaves, perhaps, not more than a dozen of those making up the fast fading "Gray Line" in our parish. This patriot and patriarch was preceded to the grave by his wife--"A mother in Israel"-- by about eighteen months. Uncle Tom was about seventy years old and is survived by five sons and two daughters: H.D. Roberts, J.W. Roberts, Rev. W.F. Roberts, Grady Roberts, of Jena, Ed Roberts, Monroe, Mrs. J.M. Allen and Miss Etta Lena Roberts of Jena. This report extends condolence to the bereaved in this hour of sorrow and feels with all the great loss we have sustained. The remains were buried with Mason honors Tuesday evening.
