Smith, 85, of Jonesville, died Friday, February 6, 1998, at LaSalle General Hospital in Jena following an extended illness. He was a retired foreman for the Louisiana Department of Highways and a member of Lake Lily Baptist Church in the Sandy Lake community. Services were held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Lake Lily Baptist Church with the Revs. Frank Bass and Russell Hathcock officiating. Burial followed in the Heard Cemetery near Manifest under direction of Young's Funeral Home of Jonesville. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Smith of Jonesville; five sons, A. J. Smith of Monterey, John Harvy Smith, Ivy Lavon Smith, Carl Edward Smith and Marshall Louis Smith, all of Jonesville; two daughters, Betty Jo Moreland of Monterey and Virginia Gail White of Jonesville; one brother, Alton Smith of Jonesville; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Brandon Smith, Randal Smith, John Wesley Smith, Jonathon Smith, Darrell White, Jr. and Stephen Moreland. (The Jena Times, Wednesday, February 11, 1998)
