Box 219 Trout, La. 71371 Submitted: December 2005 Source: The Jena Times - Olla Tullos Signal; Jena, LaSalle Parish, La. Date: January 5, 2005 Headline: Former Mayor... A Tribute to a 'true statesman' by Sammy J. Franklin Editor - Publisher The death of former Jena Mayor Orland "Cuz" Sandifer closed the book on a man who devoted more than a quarter of a century and a third of his life to the citizens of the town of Jena. Mayor Sandifer served Jena as mayor from July 1,1966 to Dec. 31, 1990. He died exactly 14 years from the date of his last day as mayor. As i was reflecting on his life and my association with this man over the past 30 - plus years. I remembered a column I wrote at his retirement. The column reflected my opinion and thoughts on Mayor Sandifer. Following is a repeat of that column just as it appeared on December 28, 1990: THE COLUMN This Thursday, the Town of Jena will honor Mayor Orland "Cuz" SAndifer who has served in that capacity for the past quarter of a century. In my thirty some odd years in the newspaper business, I have met many politicians, but very few I consider a statesman. Webster defines a statesman as one who "is skilled in government; a political leader of distinguished ability." Mayor Sandifer certainly meets taht criteria. His ability to lead the Town of Jena during the past 24 1/2 years is noteworthy and during those years, the town experienced many improvements and changes - all for the better. When I first moved to Jena in 1967, Mayor Sandifer had just finished his first year as mayor and was into his second year. We became friends almost immediately - and have remained so over the years. As any elected official would, Mayor Sandifer has had his opposition over the years, but always proved he was definitely the leader the citizens of Jena wanted - by continuously being re-elected to the post. Upon taking over the reigns of this newspaper, our offices were next door to town hall at the time and Mayor Sandifer was an inspiration to me and a big help. But he never called me anything but "Sam Jones". I was the "new kid on the block" and at 27-years-of-age and the youngest publisher in the state at the time, I needed all the advice I could get. Many time I confided in the mayor, knowing our conversation would go no further. The good mayor should have dissolved our friendship shortly after I moved to Jena when I attempted to take his life. We used an old machine to run our statements whioch required ammonia to operate. Ammonia is a colorless, pungent, suffocating gas - and the odor would just about knock you down. One day the mayor was in our office while we were running statements and I wanted him to get a firsthand smell of the odor the machine was creating. I opened the jug of ammonia (not knowing how potentially dangerous the stuff was) and let the mayor have a big whiff right out of the jug. His eyes bugged out and he couldn't get his breath. It scared me something terrible. I promised I'd never do that again to anyone. Maybe that's the reason the mayor kept a close eye on me - afraid I'd try another way to get him... and I thought he was just being a good friend. Oh well, down through the years, we have worked closely on many projests for the betterment of the Town of Jena. In fact, in 1974 I decided to seek a seat on tthe Jena Board of Aldermen - was elected - and served with the mayor and other aldermen for the next four years. I really enjoyed those years - and learned a lot about town government - and the ability of Mayor Sandifer to lead. Mayor Sandifer has helped a lot of people over these past 24 1/2 years. He always promoted as "open door" policy at town hall and if anyone had a problem, they did not have to talk with an aide or town employee, they could go directly into the mayour's office and talk with him. And in most cases, the mayor would go out of his way to help in the situation. You see, Mayor Sandifer loves people. He loves his town, his community, his state and nation. I'd bet no one would have ever tried burning a flag in front og Town Hall. Mayor Sandfier would not have allowed it. Having never lived in a town before moving to Jena, Mayor Sandifer became my first mayor and has been the only mayor I have ever had. His ability to lead will be missed when he retires on December 31st, this year. ========== ------------- SCALES, Joann ------------- Submitted by: Doug McBroom 902 Kilgore Court Allen, TX 75013, doug324@aol.com.
