He was a retired Church of the Nazarene minister and a veteran of World War II. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Jena Free Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Cole, Rev. Crouch, and Rev Summers officiating. Burial followed in Peoples Cemetery of Goodrich, Texas, under arrangements by Hixson Brothers Inc. of Jena. She was a retired bookkeeper, a member of the Baptist faith, and member of Eastern Star Chapter No. 179 of Pardeeville, Wi. She was born November 13, 1905, in Wyocena, Wi., to the union of Frank and Elizabeth Klodt Chandler. Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, September 28, at the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Walter Lloyd and Joey Paul officiating. She was a homemaker and member of the Baptist faith. She was born June 9, 1913, tot he union of Oscar and Bertha McNeil Walker. For many years she was employed at Nick's Café in downtown Jena as a cook, before she retired and became a full-time homemaker. Mrs. Watson was a retired school teacher, having taught some 30 years, most of which was a Grayson Elementary School. After her retirement, she taught the Gifted and Talented Classes at Kelly and Grayson schools. She also taught the GED classes at the Caldwell Correctional Center where she was known as the "Good Times Lady." She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbia and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, at teh First Methodist Church in Columbia witht the Revs. Pamela Roy and Ramon Warren officiating. Interment followed in the Old Bethel Cemetery west of CLarks under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. Date: October 19, 1944, Thursday Headline: Columbia Soldier Accidentally Killed in Shooting in Olla Pvt. Vernie J. Watson of Columbia, La., was accidentally shot and killed early last Sunday morning in Olla, La., when Town Marshall George W. Smith fired at a Marine during a scuffle, according to a coroner's jury report received by the provost marshall at Camp Livingston, the public relations office has disclosed. Pvt. Watson had graduated from parachute school at Ft. Benning, Ga., and was enroute to a new station. He had received a few days furlough at home. He and the Marine were involved in a disturbance in Olla, according to reports, and the Town Marshall had been called. The Marine's statement indicated that the Marshall had struck him with a club and, not knowing who his assailant was, he struck back with his fist. The Marshall reached for his gun and fired three shots, one of them striking Pvt.
