Source: Early Monroe, La. newspaper - 1918 Final Tribute to R.A. Young, Jr. - Funeral of Police Head and World War Veteran Largest in the City's History - Monroe, La., Dec. 8 - At one of the largest funerals held in the history of the city, Monroe yesterday paid its last tribute to R.A. Young, Jr. who was killed accidentally Friday night when his car became entangled with a live wire carrying 2,300 volts. At the time of his death he was superintendent of the Monroe police, also holding the order of Lt. Col. in the 156th Infantry, national guard, vice-commander of the Louisiana American Legion andother prominent posts in civic and fraternal organizations of this city. With streets lined deeply along the route, the funeral cortege made its way to the First Methodist Church. Led by the 156th infantry band, the procession included the three national guard units here, local Masons in a body, the American Legion Barkdull Faulk post, a detachment of Boy Scouts, city officials and was followed by hundreds of civilians. In a brief service in the church, Rev. F.M. Freeman paid tribute to "a splendid American" stressing the qualities of clean manhood which he had carried through the war and in his position with the city. The American Legion ritual was observed at the grave with full military honors, including a volley by the local infantry. Despite a drenching rain, the crowd did not disperse until the final bugle note was sounded.
