Notes for Roy Clifford SKINNER (La.Nat.Guard) My father told me (his son Ray) that his father (John Wesley) owned a cotton gin and one day it blow up. Great fun as no one was hurt. When daddy was too young to work in the fields one of his brothers owned a violin so daddy learned to play it while the others worked. One day his brother came to the house early and heard him playing, so he gave the violin to him. Roy learned to play the piano and some kind of horn. Roy played in a band around Vienne and around 1914 played in a Marching Band in Ruston. He was in the La. National Guard and was called into the Army around 1917. His brother Clyde was in the US Army also. Skinner, no name found in Vienna cem. dated 10 Sept. 1901. Grandfather John Wesly ordered most of his supplies from St. Louis and would go to Monroe with a wagon to pick them up. That was before the railroad came to Ruston. Notes for Martha Lula(Lou) COLVIN She told me that her grand parents (Colvin) were from England and were distant cousins. They came to the U.S. to get married because of objections to distant cousins marrying in England. They returned to England and sold his farm. They then came back to New Orelans and moved to Jackson Parish La and started farming in Union Parish a few miles Noeth of Vienna. They brought their furniture and Lillian's mother had some of it when she was a girl growing up. The above was told to me by Lillian Skinner Jan. 1999 Maybe it was her great grand Father?. Found her name(Martha Lula Colvin) and Her Father and Mother on page 335 in the Colvin Book. Ruston La. Library. Martha Lula. It seems that every one called her Lou. Sam found gold while plowing in a field on their farm. About 800 dollars he said. The farm was on Wafer creek near Vienne La. John Willie Skinner (his son) told me that his father used some of the money to buy a store and some to buy a farm near Hilly La. The story goes that a Mr Rainy lived on Wafer creek at some time. Rumors are that he buried gold on his place. He came to North La. with one of the first pioneer groups. The story I have been told is in the Ruston Leader of the time. vJohn Dawson1 SKINNER, born 22 Oct 1889 in La.; died 29 Jul 1900; buried in Vienna La.Cem.. viAddie Jewel1 SKINNER, born 23 May 1891 in La.; died 30 Jul 1892; buried in Vienna, La. Told to me by Lillian Skinner. Her mother told her that her Grandfather and her Grandmother came here from England by way of New Orleans. I think on the Colvin side. Aunt Lillian is living in a nursing home in Shreveport La. She is doing well, but has to use a wheel chair. She can remember a lot of things, but has to have time to talk about them. I had a hard time getting her to give me the year of her birth. At last she smiled at me and said, "I think it was in 1907. Generation 3 4.
