State of Louisiana Parish of Lincoln: To the Honorable the Judge of the Eleventh District Court holding sessions in and for the Parish of Lincoln. This petition shows unto your Honor the complaint of Joe GIVENS a resident of said Parish and State, that on this the 22nd day of March 1880 one A.A. SIMMONS of same residence came to a field on the farm Mrs. JORDAN which is being cultivated by complainant with the aid of his family that the said A.A. SIMMONS then and there forcibly and with arms compelled Steve GIVENS to go away from said field and took him the said Steve GIVENS away and now illegally holds and detains him all this without any authority on the part of: said SIMMONS and without any legal authority whatever. Complainant represents that said Steve GIVENS is a minor. That he is the son of complainant and his wife Harriet GIVENS and that he is legally entitled to the custody and control of said Steve GIVENS. Complainant represents that he ordered said Steve GIVENS to return to the field to his work and protested against said SIMMONS taking him away and that SIMMONS still compelled and ordered Steve GIVENS to go on with him. The said SIMMONS being there and then armed with a pistol and that the said SIMMONS illegally detains and imprisons the said Steve GIVENS. Complainant prays that a writ of Habeas Corpus be issued at once directed to the said A. A. SIMMONS commanding and requiring him to produce the body of the said Steve GIVENS before your honor at a time and place fixed by you and then and there state the reasons why he detained the said Steve GIVENS and hearing bring had prays that the said Steve GIVENS be remanded to custody of petitioner. Prays for costs and for all necessary orders and decrees. GRAHAM Judge 11th District Court for Lincoln Parish La. with said Steve GIVENS at 11 o'clock A.M. on 23rd of March A.D. 1880 and show by what authority or for what cause you have so detained said Steve GIVENS.
