Arcadia, Bienville Parish, Louisiana December 19, 1921 Page 1 BILL MILLER KILLED IN RUSTON LAST SUNDAY The following article from the Ruston Leader gives an account of the killing of W. H. "Bill" Miller. Miller is well known in Arcadia where he was at one time in the butcher business. He had been in Arcadia for the past several months and had just recently returned to Ruston: "Last Sunday afternoon, Christmas Day, J.E. Horne, shoemaker, shot and killed William H. Miller, butcher, at about 4:30. Both are residents of this city [Ruston]. "The shooting took place just in front of the Ruston Bakery, on north Trenton street. Miller was standing on the sidewalk talking to Carl Davis and Walter Richardson who were talking to him about borrowing his bird dog, when Horne walked up and fired pointblank at Miller with a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol. When the first shot was fired-which was a fatal one-Miller began running across the street, Horne shooting at him. Miller fell near the tent at the back of Knowles' store, dying within a few minutes. Four shots were fired by Horne, two of which took effect. "After the shooting, Horne quietly went to his room at the Beach hotel, put away his pistol and lay down on a bed. "City Marshall, Dan Colvin, went to his room and told him he was under arrest to which he willingly submitted. When his pistol was demanded he told the officer where he could find it. He then went with the officer to the parish jail, where he is still confined. "Yesterday, Mr. B.C. Miller, of Waco, Texas, a brother of the dead man, arrived in Ruston and took charge of the body. This brother informed us this morning that he would leave for his home this afternoon and would take the body with him to Waco for interment. "Late Monday night the wife of the dead man swore out a warrant for Horne, charging him with the murder of her husband. Horne will now be held subject to action of the grand jury. "When seen thismorning by a representative of this paper, Mr. Horne said he did not care to make a statement to the public at this time, as he had not then conferred with his attorney. The cause of the shooting, as far as we can learn, began last summer, when Horne started off on a fishing trip. When a short distance from Ruston the automobile he was riding broke down and he was forced to walk back to his home, arriving there after dark. When he reached his home, he found Miller in the room with his wife and trouble began, Miller shooting and slightly wounding Horne. The grand jury indicted Miller at the October term of the district court and he was tried at the November term. Horne's wife's sister who resided in the same house with the Hornes, swore that she had invited Miller there, so he was acquitted of a charge of willfully shooting. Miller and his wife then left this city and went to Arcadia for a while, but recently moved back to Ruston. We learn that Horne had warned Miller to never come back here. He did return and the shooting Sunday afternoon was the result." Additional Comments: William "Bill" Henry Miller is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, McLennan County, Texas.
