BILLY DEAN BRYAN

Billy Dean Bryan was born November 28, 1939 into the union of Myrtle Mavis Greer 
of Arcadia and Elvis Bryan of Downsville and died on September 16, 2013 
peacefully at home. Bill graduated from Downsville High School and then 
Louisiana State University. He received a Masters of Business Administration 
degree from Louisiana Tech University's first MBA class and became a CPA. Bill 
married Sue Hogg Bryan in 1962 and had three children, Scott, Jeff and Keli. 
Bill began working in his father's sausage plant, Bryan Sausage, as a teenager 
and went on to manage the business for several decades. The company employed 
many local people and the sausage was widely distributed throughout the state. 
His business later became known as Downsville Foods and moved to Monroe. Bill 
loved to travel and throughout his life he had many adventures with his family 
and friends. He traveled across the U.S. And Europe in a motor-home, bicycled 
with groups across mountains in Canada, and took long excursions through Central 
America. Bill had a passion for food. He loved trying new foods and he loved 
cooking for others, always something creative and delicious. Bill also loved 
organizing events and bringing new ideas to his community. He produced many 
personal growth workshops in the area as well as a celebrations, including the 
memorable Outlaw Music Festival of 1976 in Downsville. Enjoying the outdoors was 
another favorite pastime of Bill, and he wanted to share that love with his 
community. In 2006, Bill and Sue donated 35 acres to the Village of Downsville 
to be protected as a nature preserve. Then he and his wife, Shelby, spent the 
last seven years of his life developing the park to serve as a recreational area 
that includes hiking trails, picnic areas, and a pond, as well as an outdoor 
classroom for students. Bill was a visionary with a passionate and loving 
nature, living his life with intention, and fulfilling many of his dreams. He 
had a radiance about him with a wonderful attitude and smile. He loved life and 
he loved his family, always thinking of how to best support them.
Friends and family are invited to attend the Celebration of Life at Bryan Park 
on Saturday, September 21 from 4:30- 9:30pm. Bill chose the theme “Every Day a 
Holiday, Every Meal a Picnic.” Bring your lawn chair, picnic food and beverages. 
Grills are available for cooking. The sharing of memories and music will take 
place at the park pavilion. Bryan Park is located at 4644 Highway 151 in 
Downsville. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Elvis and Mavis Bryan, 
brother Charles Bryan, wife, Sue Bryan, and son, Scott Bryan. He is survived by 
his wife, Shelby McDuff; daughter Keli Bryan and husband Hany Nagib; son Jeff 
and wife Tempest Bryan; grandchildren, Trisha, Jeffrey, Jessica, Jared Bryan, 
Zain and Mazzen Nagib; great-grandchildren, Aden, Jeffrey, Jr., and Kayden. The 
family would like to thank Hospice Compassis for their care, as well as the many 
friends who have supported us during this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials 
may be mailed to: Village of Downsville, P. O. Box 128, Downsville, Louisiana 
71234, to build a picnic shelter in Bryan Park.
