Born April 18, 1937, in Washington, Louisiana, to Frank and Margaret Gauthier, Mildred was raised on a farm during the Jim Crow era. Early hardships shaped her resilience, strong work ethic, and lifelong belief that education is a right. She graduated valedictorian of Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School in 1955. On December 27, 1959, she married her childhood sweetheart, Richard J. Gallot. United in faith, they raised three children: Daphne, Loretta, and Richard Jr. (Rick). Dr. Gallot earned degrees from Grambling College, Louisiana Tech University, and Louisiana State University. She dedicated her career to Grambling State University, serving in numerous leadership roles, including Distinguished Head of the Department of History and Geography. A Fulbright-Hayes Scholar, she also taught internationally and was a published historian specializing in African American history. A lifelong member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, she served for more than 65 years in multiple leadership roles. She was deeply involved in civic, academic, and church service and was a devoted member of St. Benedict the Black Catholic Church. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sisters. She is survived by her children; nine grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; extended family; former students; and a grateful community. The family extends special gratitude to her daughter Daphne for devoted care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Mildred G. Gallot Endowed Scholarship. Her legacy of faith, scholarship, service, and love will endure for generations.
