He is survived by his wife of 61 years Barbara Jean Gunnel and born in Columbia County Arkansas on December 6, 1930 to Archie and Ruby Gunnels. He attended Calhoun School and later State A & M now SAU after returning from his service with the USAF during the Korean conflict. In 1955 he joined Magcobar as a ‘mud engineer’ and worked for 26 years across the Alabama, Mississippi, and AR-LA-TEX oilfields. After leaving Magcobar he spent several more years in the industry before taking early retirement due to health issues, always staying close with the many friends made during those years. After retiring he returned to Columbia County to be close to family and turn his attention to being a fulltime grandfather and great grandfather having 14 of these loved ones to fill his heart for many years. He was a member of Antioch East Baptist Church. Surviving Jim in addition to his wife Barbara are son James Gunnels and wife Jane of Houston TX; daughter Paula Kim Simon of Magnolia; sister Wanda Nell Ledbetter and husband Roy of Little Rock; 5 grandchildren, Amie Strong and husband Matt, CJ Pisani and husband Adam, Jessica Levin and husband Dave, Amanda Burka and husband Eric, and Victoria (Tori) Simon; and 9 great grandchildren, Lillian, Abigail, Anabelle, & Josephine Strong, Hudson & Addison Pisani, Haydon & Emma Burka, and most recently Sarah Levin. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 11:00 am at Antioch East Cemetery with Bro. Ron Owen officiating under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc. in Magnolia. Visitation with the family will be Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
