All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** The News-Star - Friday, July 17, 1992 JOHN PATRICK "PAT" KAVANAUGH Son James William Kavanaugh and Edith Digby HOUSTON, TX - A memorial service for John Patrick Kavanaugh of Houston, Texas, and a native of Ruston, Louisiana will be held Saturday, July 18, 1992 at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston. The Revs. Rolly Walker and Douglas McGuire will officiate. "Pat" was born in Ruston and died July 13, 1992 in Houston, Texas, following a brief illness. A previous memorial service was held July 15 at Terrace United Methodist Church in Houston. He graduated from Ruston High School as an honor student, received his B. A. degree in Elementary Education Summa Cum Laude in 1979 and received his Master's degree in Elementary Education in 1981 from Louisiana Tech University. He taught in Doyline in Webster Parish where he received the teacher of the year award. He received the Elementary Teacher of the Year in 1987 from the Association of Texas Professional Educators after moving to Houston and was the recipient of the 1988 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Louisiana Tech University College of Education. He was a recognized leader and trainer in Cooperative Learning at the state and national levels. At the time of his death, he was assigned to staff development as coordinator for Cooperative Learning in Houston Independent School District. He represented HISD in regional and national symposiums. In 1986-87, he received the HISD Distinguished Teacher Fellowship Award and was listed in Who's Who in American Education. In addition to his dedication to excellence in education, he was an accomplished organist. He served as organist at Terrace United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. He is survived by his parents, James and Edith Kavanaugh of Ruston; his three brothers and their families, Jay and Terri Kavanaugh of Ruston, and children, Kim and Jason; Lee and Katherine Kavanaugh of Benton, and sons Kyle and Ryan; and Christopher Kavanaugh of New Orleans, and an aunt, Mrs. Mary K. "Sis" Wood, of Ruston.
