Kidd A famous pioneer citizen left Ruston when Capt. E. L. Kidd passed away Tuesday morning. He was known and well - loved by friends all over the south and his personality will long be remembered. He had the happy faculty of making close friends upon short acquaintances and being loyal to old ones under all circumstances. Captain Kidd did his best to improve the community in which he lived and to perform the work assigned to him. His interest in education led him to be selected as a member of the state board of education and to serve as president of that body for eight years. During that time he worked to further the other schools of the state on their course of work. Fraternal, political, civic, social and commercial organizations listed the Captain among their membership because he was interested in everything that was active where life grew around him. His energy was tremendous. He constantly traveled for business and pleasure and lived life to the fullest. Duties at distant points were preformed with the same ease and exactness as those close to home. His characteristic good humor solved many difficulties for both himself and his associates and his presence in any crowd lent a distinct tone to any gathering. Early business life in Ruston knew Captain Kidd as he and his partners built firm foundations of active commerce which has lasted till today. He worked in the insurance business and was considered an authority and recognized as such over the state. His other business ventures were all successful as he applied principles of honesty and common sense to all his dealings. His unusual record as director and officer of the Ruston State Bank since its foundation was ample proof of his financial ability and his advice help weather every storm and emerge always stronger than before. Ruston will miss Captain Kidd for he represented a passing school of old southern gentlemen, ever courteous, loving life to the fullest and making it a pleasure for all those with whom he came in contact. He did his best for his town and his state and collected a multitude of glorious memories to comfort him during the last days. Additional Comments: Emmitt L. Kidd was the son of Milton Bailey Kidd & younger brother of May Olive Kidd. He was known as Captain Kidd for his service in the Spanish American War. He was the last Kidd family member to own & live in the house on Vienna St. that now houses the Lincoln Parish Museum & Visitor's Center. I believed that the recently razed female domitory on the Louisiana Tech campus was named in honor of Captain Kidd.
