Visitation is Friday, November 14, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at King’s Funeral Home, 1511 W. California in Ruston. Interment will be in Grambling Garden. Dr. Richardson was born August 26, 1925, the sixth of nine children, to the late Jesse and Emma L. Alston Richardson, in Warrenton, North Carolina. He died November 8, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Dr. Richardson had a long and productive career in the field of fine arts. He joined the faculty of Grambling College (now Grambling State University) in 1955 and established the Department of Art in 1956. Before that, he served as head of art departments at Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina and Texas College in Tyler. After retirement in 1982, he continued to make contributions to the university and community. He graduated in 1950 from North Carolina A&T College (now North Carolina A&T State University), with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. He received his master’s degree in Art from Iowa State University in Iowa City in 1953 and a doctorate in Art Education with a minor in Art History from Pennsylvania State University in 1966. He served three years as a B-25 tail gunner-armored where he rose to the rank of sergeant in the 477th Bombardment Group, popularly known as the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. In the segregated U.S. Army, this was the first and only African American U.S. Army Air Force bomber group during the war. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Pi Tau Chapter, in Grambling, Louisiana. Those left to cherish his memory are: his loving and devoted wife Thelma Powell Richardson; two sisters, Martha R. Nichols and Selma R. Massenburg of Louisburg, North Carolina, brother-in- law Attorney Lloyd Powell of Ann Arbor, Michigan; special friend and helper, Duncan Robinson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
