Speer, 72, of Grambling will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday - in his home church of Grambling/Lewis Temple CME Church with Rev. Harvey D. Willis officiating. Burial will take place in Grambling Memorial Gardens in Grambling under the direction of Our Christian Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Speer died Sunday morning at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport following a lengthy illness. Mr. Speer was a native of Atlanta, Ga., and was retired from the U.S. Army. He was Rewarded the American Service Medal, the World War II, Victory Medal, The European-African-Middle --Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal with four loops. Mr. Speer is survived by his wife, Helyn B. Speer of Grambling; one (laughter, Major Joann Speer Martin of Enid, Okla.; one sister, Mrs. Josephine S. Banks of Charlotte, N.C.; one godchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A wake will be held from 6 - 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Our Christian Funeral Home. The body will lie in state at the church on Thursday from 9-10 a.m.. The casket will be closed before the family comes in and will not be opened again.
