Carver, EdD2001 I didn't meet Grandpa George until the middle of the 1950s when I entered Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond as a freshman student and began dating Joan Elaine Bernard, who later became my wife. By that time, he was in ill health and seemed to be a gentle old man. However, in his earlier days, I've heard stories that he was a "rough and tough" fellow and had a problem with the bottle. He spent some time in the Greenwell Springs Hospital with TB. The situation became unbearable for his wife and his six children so Edna Augusta (Gussie) Pippin Flecter decided to file for a divorce, circa 1930-1931. Much later she married a second cousin of George, Leslie Lee Rownd (1890-1956), who is buried at Denham Springs Memorial. George was born in Baton Rouge on February 23, 1892. He married "Gussie" in March of 1913. He died April 5, 1960, and is buried in the Bethlehem (Baptist) Cemetery in Albany, LA, located in the parish of Livingston. His parents were James G. and Malissa T. Lewis Fletcher. Her parents were John Lofton and Edwina Y. Webb Pippin. Gussie was born May 23, 1891 and died August 14, 1977. She is buried at Greenoaks Memorial in Baton Rouge. Six children were born to him and Augusta: Grace Irene Fletcher, born in Natalbany, LA on April 29, 1914, and died in 1998 in Baton Rouge. Spouse was James Woodrow Hutchinson. Child: Linda Faye. Lucille Edna Fletcher, born August 11, 1916 in Hammond, LA, and died in 1998, buried at Greenlawn in Hammond, LA. Spouse was Lawrence Louis Bernard. Children: Joan Elaine and Larry Louis. Lois Betty Fletcher, born in Natchez, MS June 27, 1919 and died in Ponchatoula, LA, June 29, 1990. Spouse was LeRoy Lafferty (Doc) Adams. Children: Victoria (Vickie) Arina, Sheryl (Sherry) Lynn, Carolyn Jean, Judith Kaye, Janice Faye. Judy and Jan are twins. They resided in Ponchatoula, LA. Robert Lee (Bobby) Fletcher, born October 16, 1922, in Hammond, LA, died in 1982. Spouse was Louise Parish. Children: David and Julie. They resided in Baton Rouge. Carroll Webb Fletcher, born October 16, 1922, in Hammond, LA, is a retired EBR Parish deputy sheriff, and resides in Baton Rouge. Spouse is Margaret Wardlaw. Children: Richard Webb, Kathy Lynn, and Darrell Lee. Louis Price Fletcher, born July 31, 1925, in Hammond, LA, is a retired contractor and lives in North Miami, FL. Spouse was Irene Marie Stockwell. Children: Rene, Suzanne, and Karen. George was a painter and wallpaper hanger. From what I heard from family members, he was very good at it. He died of heart failure. His sister, Lelia Ard and her husband, Felix G. Ard are also buried nearby at Bethlehem Cemetery, Albany, as is his brother, Reggie and his wife, Samaella "Ella" Stewart. His father, James G., (1864 - 1911) is buried in James Chapel Cemetery in Livingston Parish, and his mother is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, perhaps in EBR parish. The father of James G. was George Washington Fletcher. His mother was Martha Ann Rownd. George was born in St. Helena Parish, LA, in 1832 and died in 1905. George was buried in the Amite Baptist Cemetery in Livingston Parish. However, I've been told by Louis Fletcher, that the Amite River flooded at one time and washed a number of the graves away. Apparently his grave was one of them as I visited this cemetery in the fall of 1993 and could not locate it. The father of George Washington was Jehu D. Fletcher, and his mother was Margaret Glover. George was one of ten children born to this family. Jehu (also known as John) was born about 1791 in South Georgia, and died in 1865 in Greensburg, LA. Jehu's parents were George and Patsy Fletcher. George was born in Charleston, SC on December 28, 1752. In 1814 he was elected local preacher in the Methodist Church in Vicksburg, MS. George and Patsy had seven children. His parents were William and Elizabeth Fletcher (my No. 3). This No. 3 also had a second wife named Elizabeth McIntosh. The maiden name of his first wife, also named Elizabeth, is unknown. The parents of William Fletcher (No. 3) were William Fletcher (No. 2) and Sarah Fletcher. William No. 2 died in August 1729, and his son, William No.3, was born October 13, 1729. No. 2 is listed as the oldest of the ten children of William No. 1. The parents of William No.2 were William and Elizabeth Fletcher (No. 1). William (No. 1) was born about 1650, married about 1675, and died in 1710 in Accomac County, VA. William and Elizabeth (No.1) had ten children. He acquired his land by an English Grant of Manor in the 1600s. His father, also named William, came to the USA on the "Mr. Middleton" in 1634.
