It is a level country intersected by numerous streams. Between the Tangipao and Tickfaw Rivers the land is indifferent - covered with a growth of coarse grass affording pasturage for numerous herds of cattle. A pine forest extends from one river to the other. (end of first census page) I, E.M. Davidson, Asst. U.S. Marshal for the Parish of Livingston, La., do hereby certify that the "Census Returns" contained on the one page and 22 lines preceeding of Schedual No. 3 (at the top of each of which Page and etc. appears my own proper signature as required by law) were well and truly recorded by me according to the tenor of my oath of office. In faith whereof I do hereby set my hand at Springfield, Parish of Livingston, this 31th day of October, 1850 E. M. Davidson Asst. The other portions of the parish, viz, between the Tickfaw and Amite and Blind Rivers, has a fertile soil which produces the Oaks, the ash, the magnolia and the Birch on the high lands and Cypress in the Swamps. The climate is mild and salubrious, also, heat prevails a long time - it is not excessive. The winter lasts about two months - Ice is rare - Snow a curiosity - No epidemic has ever prevailed in the Parish and fevers seldom occures - The usual fever is the intermittous, suborned easily. There are two sorts of fertilizing matter found in great quantities in this parish - Olluvial deposits, and accumlations of shells - all over the country are to be found shallow basins of small extent into which are convayed by rains or by the streams large quantities of decaying vegitation and Loam - which with the addition of a little Lime or ashes makes excellent manure on the Bank of ________? or on the Lakeshore are numerous Shell Banks (the existance of which have not yet been accounted for) from which roads are constructed - and Lime in small quantities is manufact- ured as a fertilizer. This material united with the deposits first mentioned is not surpassed.
