Reprinted by permission. Dedicated to the memory of Reuben Cooper and Raymond Riggs. James Chapel United Methodist Church: Established around 1850 as a circuit-rider church on a site near what is now the corner of LA Hwy 441 and LA Hwy 42 west of Springfield and south of Holden. The Church building was moved, on logs, in 1895 to the present site 1/4 mile from the junction of James Chapel Rd. S and George White Road. A member of the James family donated the original land. Said to be related to the outlaws Jesse and Frank James. James Chapel was first founded as a Methodist Episcopal Church. The original records of the church have long since been lost. One day I hope to find some of this information. The Albany Methodist Church and McCarroll Chapel, (Holden Methodist) over the years were merged with James Chapel to form the present day church. Records are available from circa 1900. Although some are missing.
