Robert's Chapel United Methodist Church, Livingston Parish, Louisiana File prepared by D.N. Pardue ********************************************** Copyright. Reprinted by permission. Dedicated to the memory of Reuben Cooper and Raymond Riggs. ROBERT'S CHAPEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, the first church for blacks in the Denham Springs area, was established in 1894 in a log cabin that was also used as a school. A Rev. Woodard organized the church. Three years later the members bought two acres north of Denham Springs for $2 from P.E. Hill, who donated another acre. They named the church Plain View Methodist Church. The Methodists still own this property, which is used for a community cemetery. The church was moved from the Plain View location in 1908, when a half-acre was bought on River Road near the present Denham Springs cemetery for $35 from Mrs. Mary Allen Duffy. During this time, it is believed the church took the name Robert's Chapel after a Rev. Roberts. Property for the present church on Julia Street was purchased from Ferguson and Brashears in 1945 for $5, and a sanctuary, parson- age and educational building have been built since then. --- Arthur L.
