Reprinted by permission. Dedicated to the memory of Reuben Cooper and Raymond Riggs. SPRINGFIELD FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH existed as a mission as far back as 1880, when it was a part of the Livingston Mission, Woodville District, Mississippi Conference. It was organized into a church on June 14, 1883. The original building was located near the Springfield cemetery, but it is unclear as to what happened to the building. The second location was near where the home of Mrs. Annie L. Rownd now stands, but a 1922 hurricane destroyed the sanctuary. It was then moved to lots donated by the Knights of Honor, Lots 3, 4, and 5 of Square 17. The transaction is recorded in Livingston Parish Conveyance Book 37, page 278. Some 42 pastors, beginning with the Rev. E.F. Edgar, have served since the church was organized. The present building was consecrated in June, 1966 and a new parsonage was completed in May, 1969. Four new Sunday School rooms were added to the old educational building in 1975. -- Aubra Fontenot and Calvin C. Fayard * * * * *
