Burial French Settlement Community Cemetery Julia Ann Wills Bowman was the daughter of William Wills and Mary Thomas Wills, St. Francisville, Feliciana Parish, Louisiana Calvin Doris Bowman belonged to Olive Branch Masonic Lodge, Clinton, Louisiana. The family moved to Amite City, Louisiana between 1860 and 1861. Before the year of 1866 they moved to Livingston Parish, Louisiana where he was engaged in the early sawmill operations of lower Livingston parish until his death in 1888. He built his home at French Settlement in Section 46 Township 9 S. Range 4 E. This home was bought by Dr. T.B. Odom in the late 1890's when he started his medical practice in French Settlement. Later it became the home of Dr. Valmond J. Gautreau. Today there is a Food Shop located on the place where the old home stood for many years. Knickbacker, a well known Methodist Minister throughout Texas. III. Alzada Jane Bowman married second - Andrew M. Davidson, son of Joseph K. Davidson and Elizabeth Carter. He was a lawyer. Bowman, Jr. lived in French Settlement, Louisiana, next to his father's home. He became Postmaster at French Settlement, Louisiana Feb 12, 1874 until Jan 27, 1880. He was a member of Livingston Lodge No. 3134, Knight of Honor. The building for the lodge in French Settlement is still there. It is the home of the Noel Lobell family. In 1884 he moved to Whitehall where he was in business which engaged in manufacturing sawed lumber. The sawmill was located on the Amite River on a point above and on the opposite side of the river from Whitehall landing. Around 1890 Calvin Doris Bowman, jr. built his home on property he had formerly bought on 5th May 1879, which was Section 61 Township 8 South, Range 4 East, at a place he named Poley, Louisiana. The location of the Bowman School was not far from this site. He owned and operated a grist mill at this home place and a sawmill. In the early 1900's he operated a sawmill known as Bowman, Salassi and Bowman at Bayou Barbara, Louisiana. The first Postmaster of Poley, Louisiana, was his son, Martin L. Bowman. After his son moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, be became Postmaster from Aug. 20, 1913 until his death on the 11th of Feb. 1928 Calvin Doris Bowman, Jr. served the community of Poley, Louisiana and surrounding areas as Justice of Peace for many years.
