Jan 19, 1925 We had soem awful rains, last week, and last night the Amite went wild, and rose over night so fast that the backwater is close to the kitchen again. We has to move orr preacher out, Theo Chambers, Brannons, Boyers, Browns and Hatchels, they all moved out of their houses and some camp now in the Baptist Church. Of course we took the organ out of the church, but the benches and the purpit and table are floating around in the church.. However, I think the water stands still now. Jan 21, 1925 Joe(Exner) is still staying at Mrs Addie Allens. Althea Cannon had a birthday party last night and Beatrice (Exner) went with Esther(Exner) Hazel(Morrison) is wearing John D's (Exner) class ring and he wears hers on his watch chain. Nearly all the girls of Denham Springs were there and most of them are church goers too. Jan 25, 1925 The high water did not do too much damage this time, we are having some bad cold weather still. Jan 30, 1925 The weather is rather bad, cold and wet, Mr Noah Stafford got a job with the State Highway commission and turned it over to John(Exner) and Joe(Exner) is working with him. They are making cylindrical blocks of concrete down near Shady-Rest. These blocks will be put on the river bottom to cause the sand to settle in certain places and prevent washouts. Its is raining harder and I can hear the train whistle. (house is on Old River Road, now called Main Street.) Feb 1, 1925 John (Exner) mot likely contracted the typhoid fever when he held Melvile Wests head on his lap in Murrays car on the way to Baton Rouge.. or by drinking contaminated water in Shreveport. Feb 5, 1925 Feb 5, 1925 You must not count on Mr Easterly giving you a job as he has so many kinfolks he must give preference to. The Summers girls board or keep house in town most of the time, but just now they come and go with Mr Rechaurd (Richard){pronounced Re Shard}. I have just heard that Bro McQueen is very sick. Yesterday they buried Hooper Wilson, the husband of Elvira Benton, who died in Texas. Old man Jim Chandler of Live Oak died too. Mrs Jackson came and offered a quart of sweet milk every afternoon and will not let us pay for it either.
