The letters were written from Henry to his daughter Ruth Elizabeth, his oldest daughter, who was in Uniontown PA at McCrum Training Institute. The letters were written between Sept. 1924 and until late 1948, and contain a living history of Livingston Parish. The letters are copied from the original text as originally written, with no corrections for spelling or grammar. ********************************************** Copyright. Names contained in () are my identification of the people listed. Sept. 15 1924: I took Johns and L.B's . picture the other day, the snapshot of Brother McQueen (Pastor at First Methodist Church, Denham Springs) and Mrs McQ was a faillure. Sept 22,1924: Mrs Addie Allen, came to visit Mr. Russell Webb and family came after church and visited until 6 o clock. Only the other day a state revenue inspector came to Denham Springs and ever merchant has to pay a special license for selling candies for the past three years too, and with the fine for not having paid the license before, I must now pay 40.30 or more and do not see where on earth I shall get that money. No body knew anything about that new law before. It is true threre is a small colony of Hungarians at Albany, near Hammond and these are mostly Slaves, but speak Hungryian. They have three churches at Albany, On Baptist, one Catholic, and one Lutheran and these people are well Americanized and only a few new immigrants have come during the last ten years.. There is a great deal of lively talk in our church circles as concerning the Union of the two branches of Methodism; ! Well Brother McQueen is an old K.K. K. from boyhood up and he sees all kinds of danger in this unification plan and as do most southerners and it is impossible for a northerner who is not familiar with our race problem, to realize and understand the difficulties as only the South sees it. How do you find the young ladies in Uniontown in regards to headdress? Are they all "bobbed"? and do you still worry about your hair? Most of the older ladies here are now trying to grow long hair again and are hiding their bobbed hair in different ways. Sept 24, 1924: Today is election day and I hope Mrs Geneva Chambers will be elected to the school board. Mrs Gertrude Scivique suggested that your name be kept on the Sunday School roll.(First Methodist Church, Denham Springs). Louisa Edwards, Bonny Summers, (Daughter of Annie Laura Summers and Milton J. Miller and step daughter of Henry Exner) Hazell, (Morrison) send their love. Sept 30, 1924: Maybe you do not know, that our lawgivers at Washington are seriously thinking of passing a national law, by which it would be unlawful to compel any boy or girl less than 18 years old, to do any kind of manual work… not even dishwashing, think of that. Bea had spent the night at the Burlingames and slept with Ruby B. and Ruby had had some kind of bad fever this summer and we are afraid that perhaps it was typhoid fever. Helen Cockerham went to Natchitosh, one Monday and was home by Wednesday. She goes to LSU in the car with Hazell (Morrison) At Sunday School I have divided the Beginners class and organized a little people class. Minnie and Mattie J. (Jackson), Lile-Buras E. (Easterly) and Ade-Bell Johnson are in the new class with Mrs. J.D. Easterly teaching. Mrs Naul (or Nael) teaches beginners class.(First Methodist Church, Denham Springs) Oct 9, 1924: The dry season pervails and the future looks very dark for us in this part of Louisiana. Most of the woods fires have been checked but there still will be thousands of cattle dying of starvation this coming winter for want of grass. Esther and Bea went to Mrs. Ben Wilkersons Oct 20, 1924: The kids walked down to Mrs Weavers, Stirling had been at our house for dinner as usual. (Henry Exner had a Grocery Store, the family lived on old River road, between College and Leslie Streets). Mrs Addie Allen stopped in or her way to visit Mrs Holden who is not improving much. Oct 29 1924: Saw Preacher Comish and Carrew Comish at the bank today. Mrs Holden sits on the gallery, she has not improved much. Preacher Arceneaux and little girl in their car, hit my litle Billy wagon in front of the store. Nov 3, 1924: The children had a Halloween Party at the Lamms. Nov 13, 1924: Well, there is no rain as yet, so you see, we are having troubles of our own down here. The business outlook is ver discourging. Gracie Courtney lives in BR now, Jesse works there. Do you know what our Sunday School collected for Orphans day? One dollar and 99 cents. I certainly was sorry and ashamed. You know they are facing a mighty hard time this coming winter at our orphanage on acount of the horrible drought. They lost all their crops. Mrs Pearce is a teacher (at the Denham Springs School) Nov. 14, 1924: Bro McQueen is in Crowly at a conference. Esther (Exner) and Uncle John (Exner) at the Piries Nov 15, 1924: The pecan crop is a gereral failure due to the drought, the native small pecans sell for 25 cents a pound this year. Dec 4, 1924: Mr Heard Merrill stopped at the store. They come to visit Mrs Ruth Coskerham. Ruth C. has been sick for a week now. Old Man Bax Summers was run over by a truck last Saturday night right in front of the drug store. His horse dies the next morning and he himself is not expected to live and was transported to the Lady of the Lake Sanitarium. We are going to have a new pastor, Bro McQueen is goig to Springfield.. Louisa Edwards was here and Mrs Holden is doing a bit better. Dec 15, 1924: Sulcer Wests little girl, Elizabeth died yesterday and will be buried today at the Baptist Cemetery. Our new preacher is Jay Coburn, son of Bro A.J. Coburn who built our church. He is married, has no children. Dec 30, 1924: It is raining now since last Saturday and on Xmas day we had ice, sleet, rain and wind one day after another. It certaily is the wors cold weather we have had in years. Old Lady Newton died today.
