Reprinted by permission. Dedicated to the memory of Reuben Cooper and Raymond Riggs. BAYOU BARBARY ROAD The old Bayou Barbary Road had its beginning near the center of French Settlement in Section 41, T8S-R4E and followed the high land (highest elevation point in the French Settlement area (1)) in a northeast direction to- ward Bayou Barbary. Louisiana Highway 444 is this road today. It begins in Section 43 several hundred yards north of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, then takes a northeasterly direction past Bayou Barbary to Killian, Louisiana. Since Bayou Barbary is shown on the old 1816 Map of Louisiana, there is little doubt that the first road men- tioned above is a very early one. -- Mrs. Lucille Cooper ---------- (1) Ref.
