King George Bayou, Livingston Parish, Louisiana File prepared by D.N. Pardue ********************************************** Copyright. Reprinted by permission. Dedicated to the memory of Reuben Cooper and Raymond Riggs. KING GEORGE BAYOU had its beginning just below and south of the old store house building which was located in Section 37, T9S-R4E on the first early map of French Settlement. At that time it was a flowing stream from the Amite River, but in the years to follow, the entrance was closed by the continuous dumping of sawdust from a nearby sawmill. This is an account told by an elderly citizen of the community. The entrance from the river remains closed. The bayou is located in Sections 37, 2 and 1 in T9S-R4E and in Sections 6 and 5 of T9S-R5E, at which point it is open to the Amite River. There could have been a definite purpose for closing the west passage of Amite River to Bayou King George many years ago. It is most interesting to note that the distance between the west and east entrances of Bayou King George on the Amite created a shorter route than the lower one for such a journey. -- Lucille Cooper * * * * *
