Reprinted by permission. Dedicated to the memory of Reuben Cooper and Raymond Riggs. SMARY BRANCH rises south of the old Fourth Ward School in Section 28, T5S-R6E, and crosses the Kinchen Road and the Albany-Montpelier Road before joining the Little Natalbany River northeast of the Albany-Natalbany Road intersection. Aunt Samyra Kinchen (1862 - 1925) lived on the west bank of the branch, and due to her home's proximity to the stream, people began referring to it as the Aunt Samyra Branch. (Samyra Kinchen is buried in the Kinchen Cemetery located south of US Hwy. 190 between Albany and Holden. On her headstone, her name is spelled "Smira.") (1) Records in the state land office indicate that Samyra J. Kinchen purchased 40 acres of land in the area of the branch from the US Government on Aug. 9, 1898.
