Reprinted by permission. Dedicated to the memory of Reuben Cooper and Raymond Riggs. STARNS is the surname given to a bridge, Starns Bridge, which spans the Tickfaw River north of Holden on La. Hwy. 441; an extinct post office, Starns Post Office, which was situated near the Starns Bridge on land now owned by Wright "Bob" Morgan; several cemeteries; and a road, Starns Road, which runs in a northwest direction from Albany to the Tickfaw River. The Starns Road, a parish road, is also locally known as the Pea Ridge Road. The Starns family has resided in Livingston Parish for a long time, as the Spanish West Florida Records mention a civil suit filed in 1805 by Thomas Spell against Jacob Starns. Starns Post Office was established on April 13, 1882 with Adolphus Starns as postmaster. The geographical site location report dated Dec. 23, 1881 indicates that the proposed name was Starns Mills, but the Post Office Department shortened this. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan related that a mule and buggy were used by Sentell Lott to carry mail from the Holden post Office to the Starns Post Office. Sellona E. Starns was the second postmaster, and the office was discontinued on April 17, 1917. Professor Alcee Fortier's book Louisiana, 1914, contains the following entry on Starns: Starns, a post-village in the northeastern part of Livingston Parish is a station on the line of the Brakenridge Railway & Navigation Company about 12 miles north of Springville, the parish seat. The Starns family had been much earlier involved with another Living- ston Parish post office, as other postal records indicate that Edward B. Starns was the first postmaster of the Hollywood Post Office, established Jan. 19, 1856 and discontinued on June 22, 1866. Mail Route 8174 extended from Stoney Point by Dennis Mills, Hog Branch, Roberts Mill, and Hollywood to St. Helena. Another Livingston Parish post office with which a member of the Starns family was affiliated was Springfield. Purnell F. Starnes served as post- master from June 12, 1858 to June 28, 1866. -- Clark Forrest, Jr. * * * * *
