Julius A. Blount, of Walker, who regularly carried baskets of peaches to other legislators during his 16 years at the State Capitol, died Friday, Aug 15, from complications from surgury. Blount served 12 years as a Livingston Parish police juror and was elected to four terms in the state House of Representatives, his son Lloyd Blount. said Saturday. A former pipefitter and construction supervisor, Julius Blount retired from teh Legislature in 1988 and turned to working in his garden and spending time with his family. Former state Rep, Donald Ray Kennard, who servd alongside Blount, Said "Blount was known for his values and the peaches he placed on desks at the Capitol". "He was a prince of a guy," Kennard said, "His honesty and integrity I always rememberd." Blount, a World War II Veteran, entered politics because he saw it as a way "to get things done". Lloyd Blount said. He worked as a police juror to fund drainage improvements in Livingston Parish. Blount decided to run for the Legislature because he thought he could do more for his parish at the state level. His son said. Blount, who never lost an election developed a good raport with other lawmakers and the two governors he served under. He became known as the "peach man" by some legislators after the family started growing peaches in a two-acre orchard.
