He was born 16 May 1927 in Mix where he attended Miss Amilee’s one room school. He later attended Poydras High School and graduated from Rougon High School in 1944. He then attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI) in Lafayette beginning in the fall of 1944. In the spring of 1945 he and two buddies joined the US Navy and finished boot camp in August 1945. He attained the rank of TEM 5 and served in Guam and the Aleutian Islands. He got out of the Navy in August 1949 and reenrolled in SLI, now University of Louisiana in Lafayette in the spring of 1950. He was called back to active duty in August 1950 and served on the USS El Dorado until November 1951. After being discharged he graduated from SLI in 1954 and received his masters + 30 hours from LSU. He stayed in the reserves for several years. Mr. Abbot taught English and speech at Jennings High School from 1954 until 1956 when he joined the faculty at Baker High School where he taught English and speech and along with the music department put on some wonderful plays. He was later certified as a guidance counselor, a position he held until his retirement from Baker High School in June of 1990. While he was at Baker High School he announced the football games from 1969 until 2006 and was known as the “Voice of the Buffalo”. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Baker High School on Sept 19, 2009. He started his young life at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lakeland. He became a charter member of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Zachary in March of 1957 and a member of St. Frances Episcopal Church in Denham Springs. He was a licensed Eucharistic minister of the Episcopal Church and taught Sunday School at St. Patrick’s in the 1950s. He was a master Mason in Livonia Lodge No. 220 in New Roads, where he served as master of his lodge. He was initiated in the Order of the Eastern Star Aurora Chapter 54 in New Roads, where he served as worthy patron, and later joined Star of Baker 234, where he served as worthy patron. He was worthy grand patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, State of Louisiana in 1975-76. He married his wife on Dec 15, 1951. Services were held at Charlet Funeral Home of Zachary on Sunday, Nov 29, 2009 with the Masonic service followed by the Eastern Star service.. The memorial service was held at the funeral home on Monday Dec 30, 2009 and concluded with interment in Shaw-McHugh Cemetery on Shaw Cemetery Rd in Zachary. His wife of 58 years, a son, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, four grandsons, a granddaughter, two sisters, and a devoted niece and her husband survive him. Preceding him in death was his parents, George and Elsie Belle Mott Abbott; a brother, George Abbott Jr., and wife Eva Kleinpeter Abbot; a sister, Luella Dozier Abbott, and brother-in-law, Mosby J.
