She grew up in the farming community of Swampers. During World War II she served as a Navy certified welder in New Orleans. She worked for the Rural Electric Authority in Winnsboro until the mid-1960s at which time she and her husband started the JK Cowan Sr. Construction Company in Denham Springs, which she headed until she passed away. A family service was held at Providence Memorial Cemetery near Ward III Community in Winnsboro on Saturday Nov 28, 2009. Her daughter, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters, numerous nieces and nephews and other family members, as well as her beloved German Shepherd Bullet survive her. Preceding her in death was her husband, Jesse K. Cowan Sr.; her parents, Lawrence and Lula Talbert.
