He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Visitation and funeral services were held at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home in Baptist on Saturday Dec 27, 2008 from 9 am until the funeral service at 11 am with entombment in Greenlawn Mausoleum. Mr. Cowart is survived by his wife of 70 years, two sons and daughters-in-law, six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and an expected great-grandchild, a sister, two brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Cowart was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Cowart; great- granddaughter; sisters, Irena Boyd and Lorena Schanil; and brothers, Joe, Ellis and Wilton Cowart.
