DEAS, EDWARD LUTHER

Edward Luther. Deas 71 died Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his home in Hammond.  He 
was born Feb 1, 1938 in Purvis MS and was a longtime resident of Washington 
Parish, where he coached and was a principal for many years.  He graduated 
high school at 16 and William Carey College at 19 years of age. Masters Degree 
from Mississippi Southern and + 30 from SLU. He was a basketball coach in 
Mississippi and Washington Parish School system. He was principal of Pine High 
School for 20 years. He was president of the Washington Parish Retired 
Teachers Association for the past 3 years. A member of the Louisiana Reading 
Council and past member of the Louisiana Association of School Executives, 
Louisiana Association of Principals and Phi Delta Kappa. He was active for 
years in local, parish and state politics.  He wanted to be remembered as “a 
man who hated no one and who always tried to help anyone in need.”

Visitation was held at First Baptist Church in Franklinton on Tuesday, May 5, 
2009 and resumed on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 until the funeral services with 
interment in Rose Memorial Cemetery in Hammond.

His wife, his first wife and the mother of his five children, four daughters, 
a son, a stepdaughter, a stepson, two brothers, 11 grandchildren, two great-
grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren survive him.

His parents, Nader and Julia Holcomb Deas, preceded him in death.
Crain Funeral Home of Franklinton was in charge of arrangements.
