He retired after 30 years as a building contractor. Mr. Haydel is survived by his wife of 66 years, a daughter, and two sons and daughters-in-law. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, six great- grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father, George Anthony Haydel Sr.; and mother, Bernice McCartney Haydel. Mr. Haydel was a charter member of Baker Masonic Lodge 441 F&AM for more than 60 years, having served as master of the lodge in 1957 and as treasurer for 36 years, past high priest of the Istrouma Chapter 92 Royal Arch Masons, past illustrious master Istrouma Council 33 Cyrptic Masons, past commander Istrouma Commandery 28 Knights Templar, past monarch Alazar Grotto, was very active in charity works and a member of Riverside Baptist Church. In 1944, George was employed by LSU and helped build the first fire truck for the LSU Fire Department. Visitation was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Monday with a Masonic service. Visitation continued at the funeral home Tuesday until funeral services in the chapel, officiated by Dr. Larry Hubbard. Burial followed in Roselawn Cemetery. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Life Source Services of Baton Rouge and Harvest Manor Nursing Home.
