HOLMES, NELL CLARISSE MATHERNE KERNAN

Nell Clarisse Matherne Kernan Holmes, 87 of Baton Rouge and a native of 
Pumpkin Center, died Sept 19, 2009 at 2:25 am.  She was born Dec 11, 1922 in 
Pumpkin Center.  At age 12 she gave her life to Christ, and lived a life of 
Christian Fellowship with her fellowman.  She devoted her life to Christ at 
First Baptist Church of Baton Rouge.  She was active in First New Testament 
Church until her illness prevented her from serving.  She grew up in Baton 
Rouge and attended Baton Rouge area schools.  She and her daughter became one 
of the first mother and daughter real estate teams in Baton Rouge.  She 
graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1941 and was a graduate of Spencer 
Business School.  She was also a graduate of Bob Brooks School of Real 
Estate.  She was a member of the Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors 
and the National Association of Realtors.  She worked for the military on 
various Army bases during WWII, as well as the state of Louisiana.  

A memorial service was held at First New Testament Church on Thursday, Sept 
24, 2009.

She was survived by a son and daughter-in-law, a daughter, four grandchildren, 
11 great-grandchildren, a niece and nephew-in-law, and a nephew and niece-in-
law.

Preceding her in death were her first husband, Joseph A. Kernan, who was 
killed in WWII, her second husband of 56 years and the love of her life, 
Malcolm R. Holmes, Sr; and her parents, L.A. “Shorty” and Clarisse “Clara’ 
Matherne
