He was 75, a resident of Denham Springs and a native of tusk, Texas. He was a retired executive editor of the State-times and Morning Advocate and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II,

Visitation was at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, on Monday until religious services on Tuesday, conducted by Jim Sawyer, Internment was in Denham Springs Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Ellaine Holley Hughes; a son and daughter-in-law, James H. III and Linda Hughes, French Settlement; two daughters, Holley Hughes, Denham Springs, and Heath Tabor, Prairieville; two grandsons, Wallace Ray Mack and Andrew tabor; and a brother and sister-in-law, Edward B. and Zelma Hughes, Lufkin, Texas. His parents, James H. and Beulah Hughes; a granddaughter, Angela Santissteban; and a grandson, Andrew Mack, preceded him in death.
