ORTON, PEARL DRUMWRIGHT

Pearl Drumwright Orton, 83 a native of Holden, died Aug 18, 2009.at Baton 
Rouge General Medical Center.  She was born Dec 31, 1926 and graduated Holden 
High School as Valedictorian of her class.  In 1946 she received a Bachelors 
of Music at Southeatern Louisiana College in Hammond, where she was a member 
of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority.  She earned her master’s degree in music at 
LSU in 1948.  From 1948 to 1957 she worked for the East Baton Rouge Parish 
School system.  She taught music in Lincoln Parish briefly.  Mrs. Orton taught 
music at the Ector County school system from 1962 to 1969 in Odessa TX, then 
became guidance counslor at Permian High School in Odessa from 1969 till her 
retirement in 1987.  In 1994 after the death of her husband she returned to 
Baton Rouge where she remained active in the Music Club.  She was a member of 
the Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority.  She had served as Secretary of the 
National Music Educators Association; she was also a member of the Delta Kappa 
Gamma and the Texas Personal and Guidance Association.  Pearl was licensed 
with the Texas Association for Counseling and Development.  She was a member 
of St. Johns Episcopal Church of Odessa TX.

A private service was to be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home

She is survived by a sister; twp sons and daughters-in-law; a grandson and a 
granddaughter. 

Her husband, Edward Whitefield Orton, whom she married on Dec 21, 1954; her 
parents, Mansfield and Julia Sharp Drumwright, and siblings preceded her in 
death.
