A retired pharmacist and former owner of Stone’s Rexall Drug Store in Baton Rouge for 30 years, he died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at Northshore Hospital, Slidell. He was 80, a resident of Picayune, Miss., and a native of New Orlean- s. Visiting was at the family resi-dence, 509 Oak St., Picayune, 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Survived by wife of 56 years, Ruth Martin Stone, Picayune; a daugh- ter, Anna Ruth Sellers, Picayune; two sons, Bertram M. Stone III, Baker, and Taulbert Martin Stone, Denham Springs; a sister, Althea Stone, Purvis, Miss.; seven grand-children and a great-grandchild. He was a graduate of Purvis High School and Loyola University in New Orleans, having earned a bachelor of science degree and a doctor of pharmacy degree. He was self-employed in the phar-macy business for 30 years and married Ruth Martin of Picayune in May of 1942. He was a veteran with five years of service in World War II, with three years overseas in the South Pacific. He enlisted in the Army as a private and was discharged as a major. Upon his return from overseas, he and his family settled in Baton Rouge, where he was employed as chief pharmacist at the Baton Rouge General Hospital, then as a sales representative for Pfizer Laboratories. He went into business for himself at Stone’s Rexall Drugs and later was co-owner of several other drug stores and a Bible and book store in Baton Rouge. In addition to his business, he served his church as a deacon, trustee, Sunday school su-perintendent and teacher. He served on the board of The Salvation Army, the board of directors of Baker Bank and Trust (now Hancock Bank), and served for 20 years with Lane Memorial Hospital, Zachary, as well as chair-man for five years. His honors in-clude honorary mayor of Baton Rouge, honorary district attorney of East Baton Rouge Parish, colo-nel on the Louisiana Governors staff and a listing in Who’s Who in Lou-isiana, several keys to the cities and honorary citizenships. He and Ruth received a special award for their outstand-ing work in the PTA. In 1979, they moved to Picayune where he became a member of the Picayune Evening Lions Club. He also served actively in the First Baptist Church where he was a deacon, organizer and first teacher of what is now called the Challengers Sunday School class. He worked for a short time for K&B and Westside Pharmacy. He was charter president of the Brownsfield Lions Club in Baton Rouge, and later served as district governor in Louisiana and then as an international director. Being a director afforded him the oppor-tunity to travel to most of the con-tinental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, eleven countries in Europe, Canada, Mexico and Ja-pan. He was honored with the highest award given in Lionism. He served as president of the Lou-isiana Lions Crippled Children’s Camp. He has received numerous awards, including the Perfect At-tendance award with 32 years, the 100% Club President’s award, the 100% District Governor’s award, seven International Presidents awards, the Ambassador of Good Will award, the Melvin Jones Fel-low award and the Knights of the Blind award from Mid-South Lions Sight Service. He was endorsed by the Lions of Louisiana as a candi-date for third vice president of Li-ons International in 1970.
