I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter thou into the joy of the Lord.” Matthew 25:21. She was born at home Sept. 24, 1916, at Twin Oaks Plantation in Eros. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and friend to all. Proverbs 31:10-31 describes her attributes. She served her Lord in various ways at Ridge Avenue Baptist Church in West Monroe and then as a Christian volunteer teaching English to international students, from Tulane University, at First Baptist Church in New Orleans and later becoming a member of First Baptist Church in Kenner. Upon moving to Denham Springs three years ago, she joined Istrouma Baptist Church. She was an Eastern Star and belonged to the Perseverance Chapter No. 40 and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Spirit of 76 Chapter in New Orleans. She was a member of the New Orleans Art Guild Association and her medium was oils. She especially enjoyed painting landscapes, plantation homes and rural scenes from her childhood memories. On May 6, 1935, Mildred and Stanford Salley were married. They resided in West Monroe until moving to New Orleans in 1951. Visitation was at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, on Saturday until funeral service, conducted by Dr. Joe McKeever, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church in Kenner. Burial was in Lake Lawn Cemetery. Survivors are her two daughters and a son-in-law, and reared as her own, Stanford’s three daughters and son-in-law, daughter-in-law, 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 32 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William Stanford Salley; son, Donald Stanford Salley; parents, Henry Sherrand McDonald and Annie Esther Blackwell McDonald; siblings, Paris Ratliff, Brawner, Harry, James and Happy McDonald; grandson, Johnny Gale Kilgore; granddaughter, Kimberly Wilson; and sons-in-law, Joel Moore and Denver Patrick. The family wishes to thank the employees of St. Joseph Hospice.
