John Henry Smith died on July 27, 2009. He was 89 a native of Vacherie, a former longtime resident of St. James and a resident of Baton Rouge. Mourning his passing but cherishing his memory are a daughter, two granddaughters, two sons-in-law; and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a brother, and a sister. Visitation was held at St James Catholic Church, St. James on July 30, 2009 with entombment in Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church Mausoleum, Donaldsonville. Preceding him in death were his eternal “girl-friend” and wife, Thelma Falgoust Smith; his parents, Edward Anthony and Lena Bourgeois Smith; four brothers, Louis Victor Smith, Edward A. Smith, Jr., Joe ward Smith and James F. Smith; and four sisters, Jennie Lee Smith Boudreaux, Marie Smith Strong, Lena Mae Smith, and Rosemary Smith Dous. The family requested donations to Alzheimer’s Association, 3772 North Blvd., Baton Rouge LA 70806. Mr. John served in the US Army Air Corps in World War II from 1940-46 as a communications technician in the Pacific and the Louisiana Army Reserve from 1946-52. He was a sugarcane planter/farmer with Falgoust and Smith for 40 y ears and then retired to play golf with his friends at Riverdale Country Club in Donaldsonville. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1514 in Vacherie for 50 years and a member of Elks Lodge in Donaldsonville.
