Benjamin Dowell Capshaw, Jr., 86, passed away at his home in Leavenworth, Kansas on March 12. Col. Capshaw was former assistant deputy commandant of the Command and General Staff College and Chief of Staff of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he retired in 1972 after 31 years of active service. He began his military service in 1941 and in July 1942 upon completion of the Officers Candidate School at Fort Sill, Okla, was commissioned as second lieutenant of artillery. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theatre with the Armed Forces Western Pacific in Manila, the Philippines. In the Korean War he served with the G-3 Operations sections, Eighth U.S. Army. Following retirement he worked for ten years with the Arnold Palmer Golf Co. He was also a diligent worker for the American Cancer Society for eight years and contributed much to the society's fund raising effort. Col. Capshaw is survived by his wife of 63 years, Georgia Rountree Capshaw; two sons, Benjamin D. Capshaw, III and his wife, Kristin of New Orleans and Clinton Lyle Capshaw and his wife, Kathy of Katy, Texas; a daughter, Donna Capshaw Sumpter and her husband John of Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren, Erica, Benjamin, Clinton, Christopher, Kelly, Cari and Christi; and great grandchild, William. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 15 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Leavenworth, Kansas. Interment was in the National Cemetery, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
