She was the second child and oldest daughter of Samuel and Ottilie Wall's eight children. Because Mr. Wall worked for the railroad, the family moved often and for a time lived in Magnolia, Arkansas, where Adeline graduated from high school. She married Harold Reed "Billy" Couch in 1918 and they had two children - a son, Harold Kennan and a daughter, Billie Ann. Ten years after Billy died in 1936, Adeline and her sister, Jessie, fulfilled a long-time dream and opened Shield's, a women's clothing store in Tallulah. They continued this business for over thirty-five years. It was in Tallulah that Adeline developed her talent as a painter. She loved to travel and often combined this with her artwork. Adeline took great pride in her yard. She considered winning, "Yard of the Month" one of her most satisfying accomplishments. In 1991, several years after she suffered a stroke, Adeline moved to Seattle, Washington to be near her daughter. Preceded in death by her husband, her son and her siblings, she is survived by her daughter, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a large extended family in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and North Carolina. The most remarkable thing about Adeline was not that she lived to the age of 106; it was the strength of will and character evident throughout her life. She passed away on February 14. A memorial graveside service will be held in Arkansas at the Magnolia City Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14.
