All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Irene Jordan Sevier - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Madison Journal, August 1973 TALLULAH — Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Jordan Sevier, 72, were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Tallulah Presbyterian Church with the Rev. D. L. O'Neal officiating. Mrs. Sevier died Monday at the Madison Parish Hospital after a brief illness. Burial was in Silver Cross Cemetery under direction of Crothers Funeral Home of Tallulah. Mrs. Sevier served as the only female senator in the Louisiana Legislature from 1962 to 1964, fulfilling the unexpired term of her husband, the late Sen. Andrew L. Sevier, who had served in the senate for over 30 years. She represented the 32nd Senatorial District, then comprised of East Carroll, Madison, Tensas and Concordia parishes. Active in civic activities, Mrs. Sevier was the first lady to head the parish Christmas Seal Fund, was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary, served four terms as president of the Tallulah Book Club and worked with the District Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. She was a member of the Tallulah Presbyterian Church. Survivors include two sons, Howard Sevier and A. L. Sevier, Jr., both of Tallulah; Brothers George Jordan of Baton Rouge and Francis Jordan of Pitkin; and nine grandchildren. Pallbearers were Henry C. Sevier, Jr., Barton Sevier, R. W. Gandy Jr., J. K. Post Jr., Joe M. Clark and Tommy Leoty.
