The spelling of her name suggests she was African born, but she may have been born in the New Orleans area. Daly is first documented in New Orleans in 1794 when she and her young sons, Juan Carlos and Juan Francisco were purchased by Jaius Wilcox from Joseph Ducros. Daly worked as the enslaved servant of Wilcox until July 16, 1800 when she was sold away from her sons by Wilcox to Abraham Morehoue, and moved to the Ouachita Poste area. Daly remained in the enslaved service of the Morehouse family until 1809, when she was traded by Eleanor Morehouse to John or James Henderson in exchange for two servants, Hester and Louise. Traded with her were her Ouachita born children Grace, John and Oliver. Henderson was the son-in-law of James Barlow. Daly's second set of children were born of her relationship with Lawrence Dunmore, the enslaved servant and confidant of James Barlow, who arrived on the Ouachita from Fayette County, Kentucky. On March 8, 1811, Dally and her children were purchased by James Barlow from James Henderson. The sale may have been designed to unite Daly and the children with Lawrence Dunmore. The sale price of the family was $1200.00. James Henderson's estate was settled in 1813, and it is interesting to note that Daly's children were inventoried as a part of the estate, despite their being sold by Henderson to Barlow in 1811. Henderson's widow, daughter of James Barlow, maintained both Grace and John, but Oliver, the youngest child, was sold to Thomas Lewis. Daly apparently died on the Ouachita at some point after 1811 and before 1813. No mention of her has been found after she and her children were "sold" by Henderson to James Barlow in 1811. Lawrence Dunmore was freed by James Barlow on April 26, 1826. Daly's most recognizable body of descendants were the Alford children born of her granddaughter Mary Dunmore and Warren Alford of Mer Rouge, Louisiana.
