Pope in Gum Swamp, Morehouse parish, were, upon preliminary examination, committed to jail without the benefit of bail. NOTE: The Telegraph, June 22, 1889, page 3, Column 4 reports that Mr. B. Carney, charged with complicity in Pope's murder was released on a $3000 bond. The Ouachita Telegraph Saturday, September 7, 1889 Page 2, Column 1 The assassination of Mal Carney took place on the Bastrop and Monroe highway in broad day light at a point surrounded by settlements. Such shocking crimes are liable to occur in any country, as the result of private malice, but the country in which thy are most vigilantly prosecuted and the perpetrators most surely brought to justice by the officers who are responsible for the prosecution of criminals, is the country which escapes all odium of such crimes. In the present case let us hope that the vigilance and untiring activity of our criminal authorities will result in vindicating the good name of our parish. NOTE: In this same issue on page 3, column 1, there is another article about Carney's assassination. He had been charged with the killing of Mr. Chas. A. Pope, and was out on bail at the time of his death. # # #
